Lily Zheng

Q: It has been a long time since I practiced Tao, but I still have a lot of worries. How to free from worries?

A: Like many other Tao members, your worries come because you believe that you should get rid of all worries. Most practitioners regard freeing from worries is the first state of good practitioners. Therefore, they try every method to get rid of worries or just pretend that they have no worries. In this way, they bring more worries or problems. Should a practitioner live without worries?

Take Zen master Chao for example. Once he preaches, Buddha is worries. Worries equals Buddha.

All his disciples were shocked. If Buddha has worries, why should we do the practice? One of his members asked, What are Buddha’s worries?” he believed Buddha had different worries from ours.

“Buddha’s worries are totally the same as ours.” Master Chao answered.

The member was frustrated and went on: “How can Buddha avoid the worries?”

Master Chao said: “Why should he avoid?”

We always believe that Buddha is free from all emotions, pains and worries. In fact, in Buddha’s life, he experienced many good things and bad things like us. The only point that makes difference is that Buddha doesn’t attach to anything when good things or bad things happen. He just let them go naturally like the four seasons pass by. However, we ordinary people like to attach to good things and eager for more happiness but try to prevent bad things when facing pains. Such is the difference between Buddha and us.

Buddha doesn’t avoid the worries, while we always try to pursue good things and escape bad things. When we ask for more happiness and no worries at all, we will suffer from the emotions because of good or bad. A Chinese saying goes: “Any pursuit brings suffering.”

Pains or happiness are like the water in a stream. It is sometimes clear and sometimes muddy. If we try to avoid worries, it will be like stirring the water and hoping it to be clear. The result may be worse. That’s why Buddha just lets go everything naturally without attachment. Worries don’t appear just due to good things or bad things, and it is unnecessary to get rid of them.
